A comparative study of congruence between two traditions as posted in http://www.crescentlife.com/wellness/islam_and_yoga.htm

"We always find some form of Yoga whenever the goal is experience of the sacred or the attainment of a perfect self-mastery, which is itself the first step toward magical mastery of the world. It is a fact of considerable significance that the noblest mystical experiences, as well as the most daring magical desires, are realized through yogic technique, or, more precisely, that Yoga can equally well adapt itself to either path." — Mircea Eliade, Yoga: Immortality and Freedom

There are close similarities between Islam and yoga not because of borrowing or cultural diffusion, but because of both originating in the Primordial Tradition, sanâtana dharma, al-dîn al-hanîf, which all the prophets of Allah have brought and reaffirmed throughout the ages, among all nations, revealed directly from the Creator.

Years ago when young I began doing hatha yoga. Although several years passed without practicing yoga, the complete yoga breathing I learned from it was a constant presence in my life. There was also my Islamic life, including praying salât five times every day. A couple years ago I returned to yoga while keeping up my Islamic practice. How are these two developments related? How do they interact?

When I returned to the practice of yoga, I found that it is easily integrated with the Islamic life; in fact the two assist one another. Not only is there no conflict, but Islam and yoga together make a mutually beneficial synergy. Both are agreed that, while the body is important as a vehicle on the way to spiritual realization and salvation, the human being's primary identity is not with the body but with the eternal Spirit.

This is not a case of syncretism between two religions (which would be spiritually invalid). Yoga is not a religion. Rather, it is a set of techniques and skills that enhance the practice of any religion. A French author named Jean Déchanet discovered this in regard to his Catholic faith and wrote the book Christian Yoga (New York: Harper, 1960). In my case, I have found that Islamic yoga is a reality. It is possible to employ the skills of yoga to worship Allah better and to be a better Muslim.

Yoga arose from the matrix of the Hindu world, although according to Mircea Eliade it is of pre-Hindu origin and can be traced back to prehistoric shamanism. Like India's other gifts to world civilization, for example the system of place notation on which all mathematics depends, yoga is not tied to the Hindu religion but has a universal applicability. It helps one to follow one's own religion better whatever that may be. It has certain specific affinities with Islam that make for an interesting study.

1. Metaphysical Doctrine.
Since the metaphysic of Advaita Vedanta is in agreement with the tawhîd (doctrine of oneness) of Islam, there is perfect compatibility between Islam and yoga on the highest level. All traditional esoterisms agree that everything in manifestation has its origin in the Supernal. The manifestations on the material plane are derived from the ideational realm of archetypes (known as al-a‘yân al-thâbitah in the metaphysics of Ibn al-‘Arabî). This world, limited as it is, is just an expression of the ultimate Reality, and will ultimately be reabsorbed in its supernal Origin. Advaita Vedanta and Islamic esoteric metaphysics are agreed that God is the only absolutely real, eternal Reality; all else is contingent and therefore transitory. The unitary view of reality in Advaita Vedanta accords well with the tawhîd (divine oneness) of Islam, and the Oneness of Being in the Sufi doctrine of Ibn al-‘Arabî.

It is interesting to compare the symbolism of Prophet Muhammad's nighttime ascent to Heaven, al-Mi‘râj, with the corresponding symbolism in yoga. The Prophet ascended on al-Burâq, a riding beast with the head of a woman, through the seven heavens to the Throne of God. In yoga, the kuNDalinî is a feminine power (shakti) that dwells at the base of the spine and ascends through seven levels (represented by the seven chakras) to the summit of liberation (brahmarandhra).

2. Salât and Âsanas.
One of the most obvious correspondences between Islam and hatha yoga is the resemblance of salât to the physical exercises of yoga âsanas. An Indian Muslim author, Ashraf F. Nizami, noted this in his book Namaz, the Yoga of Islam (Bombay: D.B. Taraporevala, 1977). The root meaning of the word salât is 'to bend the lower back', as in hatha yoga; the Persians translated this concept with the word namâz, from a verbal root meaning 'to bow', etymologically related to the Sanskrit word namaste. The thousands of postures and variations known to hatha yoga can be classified into a few basic types, including standing postures, spinal stretches, inverted postures, seated postures, and spinal twists. The genius of Islamic salât is to incorporate all of these in rudimentary form into a compact, flowing sequence, ensuring a thorough, all-round course of exercises for good health that is easy for everyone to practice.

a) Standing.

The Mountain Pose (TâDâsana) is the foundation for all standing âsanas. One always begins from this and returns to it at the completion of the standing sequence. In this it very closely resembles not only the standing posture of qiyâm in salât, but also the "Return to Mountain" of T‘ai Chi Ch‘uan. Standing in Mountain Pose or qiyâm is a quiescent exercise for the whole body: feet, legs, and spine working together. With one's feet planted squarely on Earth and one's head reaching toward Heaven, this pose is of the finest metaphysical significance to the sacredness of the human state, for verticality is the essence of religion.

b) Spinal stretching.

As the yogis say, one is as young as one's spine. Hatha yoga concentrates much careful attention on deep, thorough stretches of the spine, bringing the head forward to rest on the knees. Since all the nerves of the body are channeled from the spinal cord out between the vertebrae, a healthy spine is of central importance for the well-being of the whole human body and mind. It takes much patient, persistent practice to make and keep the spine ideally flexible, and only the most dedicated yogis succeed in this. Since Islam is a path for everyone, the Islamic spinal stretch is kept easy and within everyone's reach: the bowing position called rukû‘ only requires that you bend forward enough to place your hands on your knees. Nonetheless, even this minimal stretch helps keep the spine in good condition. When I returned to yoga after praying salât for several years, I found that making rukû‘ seventeen times a day had beautifully prepared my spine for deeper forward stretches.

c) Inverted poses.

The heart does its best to circulate blood all through the veins and arteries, but it's a demanding job, and exercise is needed to help the circulation go at maximum efficiency. In particular, raising fresh blood to the brain through the carotid artery, and lifting it from the feet back up to the heart, is always going against the pull of gravity. This is why two of the most important and beneficial âsanas are the Shoulderstand (sarvangâsana, the 'whole body pose') and the Headstand (sirSâsana). Islamic prayer has taken the most essential aspect of these inverted poses: lowering the head below the heart. The position called sujûd is easy for everyone to accomplish and helps to bathe the brain in fresh oxygenated blood to keep it healthy and alert. Ashraf F. Nizami writes: "This may be termed similar to … HALF SIRSHASANA. It helps full-fledged pumping of blood into the brain and upper half of the body including eyes, ears, nose and lungs."

d) Seated postures.

The word âsana means 'seat' and the basic postures for meditation are seated ones, especially the Lotus. The Diamond Pose (vajrâsana) is practically identical with the seated position of salât called jalsah. This has, of course, not escaped the notice of both yogis and Muslims in India. Nizami writes: "This is a HARDY POSE or is like VAJRASANA." Swami Sivananda in his book Yoga Asanas writes: "This Asana resembles more or less the Nimaz pose in which the Muslims sit for prayer." Furthermore, both vajrâsana and jalsah are the same as the zazen posture of Japan. Having practiced a little yoga when young, it became easier for me to sit on the floor in mosques for long stretches of time. In turn, accustomed to this in Islam over the years, it was then much easier to learn seated yoga postures like the Lotus, since my leg and hip joints were accustomed to the floor.

When sitting in the Lotus, a yoga mudra that accompanies meditation is made by forming the index finger and thumb into a circle. The Islamic mudra, made while sitting in jalsah, is to extend the index finger in a straight line (to attest to the Oneness of God), while forming the thumb and middle finger into a circle. The figure 1 and the figure 0 can convey a Tantric symbolism, and also are curiously similar to the binary 1 and 0 of computer science.

e) Spinal twists.

A session of yoga practice normally concludes, just before final relaxation, with a thorough twist of the whole spine (ardha matsyendrâsana) to the right and to the left. It helps to even out the spine from the other poses it has done and keep everything balanced. In much the same way, salât concludes with the prayer of peace (salâm) said while turning the head to the right and then to the left. This works only the cervical and maybe a few of the thoracic vertebrae, but it is useful for keeping the neck flexible and is consistent with the pattern in salât of presenting reduced versions of the yoga âsanas.

3. Breathing.

In yoga, the science and art of breathing is paramount. The relaxation and exertion of all the members of the body, the stilling and concentration of the mind, the energizing of the whole being, and the access to the spiritual dimension all depend on breathing. In most languages of the world, the words for 'breathing' and 'spirit' are the same or closely related. The Arabic word for 'spirit' is rûh, coming from a root with several interconnected meanings: 'to relax', 'to breathe', and 'to set out moving'. The full range of these meanings, taken together, summarizes all the functions of the breath in Yoga. The Sanskrit word corresponding to rûh is âtman, which also comes from an Indo-European root meaning 'breath' (compare the High German word Atem, 'breath').

The spiritual importance of breath is a part of Islam's teachings. Hazrat Inayat Khan writes on the subject of Islamic purification: "Man's health and inspiration both depend on purity of breath, and to preserve this purity the nostrils and all the tubes of the breath must be kept clear. They can be kept clear by proper breathing and proper ablutions. If one cleanses the nostrils twice or oftener it is not too much, for a Moslem is taught to make this ablution five times, before each prayer." According to Hakim G. M. Chishti in The Book of Sufi Healing, "Life, from its beginning to end, is one continuous set of breathing practices. The Holy Qur’an, in addition to all else it may be, is a set of breathing practices."

4. Meditation and Worship.

In part 23 of the Yoga Sutra, Patañjali teaches the attainment of supreme spiritual realization through devotion to God (îsvara pranidhana). The sutra is a very succinct, condensed type of literature, so a single brief mention suffices. Because Patañjali did not elaborate upon it, some commentators have assumed that his God is a mere figurehead or abstraction and therefore not so important in yoga practice. Nothing could be further from the truth; in fact, the one feature that distinguishes the metaphysic of the Yoga darsana from that of the Sankhya darsana of Kapila (a non-theistic analysis of the elements in the cosmos and consciousness) is the presence of God in Yoga. This makes all the difference, and allows the consonance of Yoga with religion.

Patañjali wisely chose to refer to God as îsvara, which in Sanskrit simply means 'God, the Supreme Being' and does not name any deity of any particular religion. This universality frees Yoga from conflict with any religious doctrine, so that its techniques can be applied by a believer of any faith. In India, Yoga has been applied to a vast variety of different religious perspectives, and it works just as well for other religions including Islam. There is nothing specifically Hindu or Islamic about its techniques, but it will assist the devotee in any kind of worship. Yoga means to concentrate and still the mind; when this concentration is directed upon God, the yogi is reaching toward the heart of his religion.

As for meditation, trâTaka is a yogic technique to focus the attention and attain one-pointedness. It consists of fixing the gaze on a single point. (It assists balance, too.) While standing in Islamic prayer, we practice traTaka by fixing the gaze on a spot on the ground where the forehead rests in sujûd. During rukû‘, the trâTaka is directed at the point between the big toes. The purpose is to focus the attention on the prayer and keep it from wandering. In this way it helps lead to a meditative state.

An important part of Sufi spiritual practice is to invoke the Divine Name Allâh and meditate upon it. Once I had learned through yoga how to still the mind and focus the attention, I discovered that the same technique greatly sharpened and clarified my meditation on the Divine Name. It was like a nearsighted person putting on glasses and suddenly seeing clearly and sharply.

Some Sufi orders practice meditation and invocation focused within certain centers (latâ’if) in the subtle body; this is the same technique as the yogic meditation upon the chakras.

5. Purification.

It goes without saying that both Islam and yoga require basic physical and moral cleanliness and purity (tahârah, sauca) before performing their practices. The two differ in several respects, but one feature that is common to both is using water to rinse the breathing passages: a yoga kriya (cleansing practice) called jala neti consists of pouring water into one nostril so that it flows through the sinuses and out the other nostril. The Muslim when making wudû’ takes water up the nose and blows it out; this is called istinshâ’. Again, the Islamic version does not go as deep, being simplified to make it easily accessible to everyone.

6. Food.

The Ayurvedic principles of yogic diet and the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are agreed that milk and ghee are beneficial, and that beef is detrimental to health. Likewise, both discourage eating onions and garlic. Ginger (Arabic zanjabîl, from Sanskrit srngivera, from Proto-Dravidian ciñci vêr) is mentioned in the Qur’ân (76:17) as a spice of Paradise. Ayurveda regards ginger as sâttvika, a quality helpful to spiritual life. Both Ayurveda and the Qur’ân tell of the spiritual qualities of the basil plant, the sacred basil (Ocimum sanctum) called tulasi in Sanskrit and the sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) called rayhân in the Qur’ân (while the Italians value it only for its culinary qualities!). Tulasi basil is used to uplift, clear, and invigorate the mind, assisting the consciousness to focus on spiritual thoughts; rayhân is mentioned in the Qur’ân (55:12) as a plant of Paradise, and the Prophet recommended it to his Companions for its refreshing aromatherapy. The Arabic word rayhân is derived from the same root as rûh 'spirit'.

Historical Interaction.
In historical time, Muslims did consciously borrow from yoga and acknowledged the source. The traveling scholar Abu Rayhan al-Biruni (11th century) translated the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali into Arabic. Shah Muhammad Ghaus of Gwalior (16th century), a leader of the Shattârîyah order of Sufis, incorporated yoga practices into his teaching, based on the yogic text AmrtakuNDa. Yoga even reached as far as North Africa, where al-Sanusi (19th century) wrote of the yoga âsanas (jalsah); he referred to yoga in Arabic as "al-Jûjîyah". However, the congruences between yoga and Islam that I noted above are not historical borrowings, but derive from the primordial beginnings of the traditions.

A large international yoga organization, 3HO, has adopted the sujûd from Islamic prayer, calling it "Easy Yoga."

Conclusion.

It can be valid and beneficial for Muslims to learn yoga, not as their spiritual path per se, but as a valuable adjunct to the spiritual path of Islam. Islam is a complete, integral spiritual path, so yoga is no substitute for any Islamic requirement. The Prophet said that wisdom is the believer's stray camel: wherever he finds it he will recognize it (and claim his right to it).

How to explain the many points of correspondence between yoga and Islam? Did these ancient teachings travel from India to Arabia? No—there is no need to assume such a horizontal transfer; the sacred truths are revealed vertically from Heaven to all peoples.

Malaysia, the only country besides india, where tamil schools still survive. One of the strongest advocates of tamil education is the MIC. Pointing to the continued existence of the tamil school system as its achievement. If not for the MIC, there will not be any tamil schools.

MIC has been in the forefronts to make certain that Tamil language and culture are an integral dimension of the multi lingual and multi cultural society of Malaysia. Furthermore, the MIC continues to play a very active role to see that, Tamil school education stands on par with other primary school education. Tamil schools are a national heritage and a distinctive component of the Malaysian education system.

Lately, the government pressured by a LOUD call from malaysian indians that tamil schools in malaysia need to be brought on par with other schools in the country in terms of funding and facilities.

As the struggle for tamil school's survival continues ( increased intensity), we saw some positive responds from the ruling government recently. ( Ref: Economic package unveiled )

Yesterday, I came across a blogpost linking tamil schools and increase of crime rate among malaysian indians. ( ref: Close Down All Tamil Schools) and a reply for it ( ref: Close Down All Tamil Schools - Should We ?)

My views : as posted in Close Down All Tamil Schools - Should We ?

A reply for Brother balan's post:
Refer :Tamil Schools To Stay On

Brother balan, u've highlighted some UGLY but TRUE facts about our situation.

But i still wonder why you choose to link it with tamil schools solely?

YES, i agree we do have our cons. But does that mean we have to give away the GIFT ( malaysia is the only country besides india where tamil schools still survive)

I choose to call for pest controllers rather then burning down the building.....

who are the so called pest controllers?

its you, me and many others who choose to sit down and look in to the issue.

what can we do?

as u mentioned, the prob arises when they set foot in sec schools.

can't we find at least 10 students each to guide ?

sounds silly? well, its always depends how we choose to see it...

Every single problem has multiple simple solutions....

thank you,

In that case, what is the problem having BM-only sign boards ???

I came across an intresting article on this today - Lets renungkan this matter........

Apabila bercakap tentang perjuangan hak asasi manusia kita amat berkiblatkan negara-negara maju.

Deepavali means "the array of lights." "Thamasomaa jyotirgamaya"(Lead me from darkness to light) is an Upanishadic prayer: This means that where there is darkness, light is needed.

Sorrow is one form of darkness. Peacelessness is another. Loss is another. Disappointment is one form of darkness. Misery is yet another. Lack of enthusiasm is another. All these are different forms of darkness. To get rid of the darkness of sorrow, you have to light the lamp of happiness. To dispel the darkness of disease, you have to install the light of health. To get over the darkness oflosses and failures, you have to usher in the light of prosperity.

Swami Vivekananda, the great Hindu savant, said that freedom is the first condition of life. And the light of Deepavali is also the light of freedom -- freedom from control, freedom from tyranny and freedom from all that artificially divides humanity.

We should not lead a life of selfishness. That is a wasteful life. It is only in community life, we can you reach out THE LIGHTS ABOVE. Give happiness and take happiness. Happiness is not a one-way traffic, it is a two-way process of give and take.

Lets forgets and forgives the wrongs done by others. Lets breath the air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere.

LETS CELEBRATE THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS, LOVE AND UNITY

HAPPY DEEPAVALI TO ALL !!!

Referring to my previous post MULTI RACIAL MALAYSIA : A BLESSING NOT A CURSE!!!

Championing one particular race & being a racist ..... differences?

For this, i would like to quote the WORDS OF YB DATUK ZAID IBRAHIM ( former de facto Law Minister)

“You can still be a champion for your race and think of the country.”

"You can have a race-based party but you don’t have to be racist bigots,”

So, To put a STOP to this CURSE, we( Rakyat) and our leaders should first revise some history lesson......

MY MALAYSIA is a multi-ethnic, multi- cultural and multilingual society. YES, we have everything. Its a GIFT to be born as a malaysian.

We used to see this 'multi' thingys as a blessing, the world envied us for this. Malaysia .... another word for social harmony and a peace loving country.

BUT

WHAT WENT WRONG NOW??? IS THIS BLESSING SLOWLY TRANSFORMING TO A CURSE???

I read with interest and pain a news report and a so called "cerpen sastera"

First

HINDRAF has been declared illegal! ( Ref : Gov't declares Hindraf an illegal organisation)
The home minister found the organization's activities contravened the Societies Act 1966 and if left unchecked, the organization could pose a threat to public order, peace, security and morality in Malaysia.

Well, its the responsibility on home minster to do what it takes to safeguard the racial harmony.

HINDRAF, unregistered, fractured, not properly organized and with a conflicting leadership structure. BUT, we have to accept the fact that it is not just an organization, IT IS the VOICE of minority malaysian indians who want to be treated with respect and enjoy equality and a fair share of the national wealth to advance economically like everybody else.

There was a comment post by brandan kuppusamy in thestar a week ago.

USE CARROT NOT STICK

The reality is there is an urgent need for both Hindraf and the authorities to step back and find common grounds and engage in a meaningful dialogue that would benefit both the Tamil poor and the Barisan which needs their support.

If the Barisan is serious about re-inventing itself and regaining lost ground it has to reach out and engage, not condemn or alienate.

The Barisan can transform itself and be a patron of the Tamil underclass and it only takes sympathy, wisdom and understanding to form a new partnership with the Tamil poor.

Threatening and showing the big stick are counter-productive and would only worsen the situation.

It is time to talk softly. ( Read more : USE CARROT NOT STICK)

I do agree with Mr. Brandan's view, but the term 'tamil underclass' is best to be mentioned as Malaysian Indians.

Second,

A so called "cerpen sastera" published in utusan malaysia (Ref: POLITIK BARU YB J) .
IT IS ONE PIECE OF **** THAT CAN REALLY CAUSE CHAOS!!!

The only ACCEPTABLE AND RATIONAL point in this cerpen is,

" Ini soal persepsi YB. Persepsinya begitulah. Hakikatnya YB tidak membenci Melayu tidak juga membenci Islam. YB sekadar memperjuangkan kepentingan kaum YB. Tidak salah YB berbuat demikian. Kalau YB tidak memperjuangkan kepentingan kaum YB sendiri, siapa lagi. Tetapi cara YB itu barangkali disalahertikannya

Not even a month after a temple in Ampang demolished , now another threat for a temple in selangor.

Yesterday i received a group mail from Mr. Mugilan, Ketua biro politik Pemuda MIC on this matter. According to the mail, a temple no.13,jalan 5,Taman Indah Serendah is to be demolished/ removed by the authorities

Today i received a blog post notification from YB Manikavasagam on this. In his post ( Ref : Notice to demolished temple issue) , he claimed that he has send his representative to identify the root cause of the problem while awaiting feedback from State Government.

A notice issued on 10th October 2008 by majilis daerah hulu selangor asking the owner/ person in charge to take action or the temple will be demolished in 7 days.

Is this approved by the state government? What the state EXCO YB Dr. Xavier got to say on this?

Who to be blamed?
The government?
or
The temple committees who still choose to ignore the importance of properly registering their temples with the authorities?

To MIC and PR Indian Reps,
WHEN ALL THIS WILL BE STOPED!!! AND RESOLVED!!! FOR GOOD???

My current term as president of Umno ends in March next year. There are several initiatives I intend to see through before I leave office. These initiatives are important because they are necessary to move our country forward. These initiatives are needed to regain our country’s competitiveness. They are necessary to enable our nation and our society to face the challenges that the world has in store for us.

I ask all Malaysians to unite and join me in working towards making Malaysia a better place

  • ESTABLISHING the Judicial Appointments Commission to enhance the stature of the judiciary.
The judiciary needs to enhance its stature and credibility in the eyes of the public. Before I end my term, I will table a Parliamentary Bill to establish a Judicial Appointments Commission. Such a Commission will propose judicial appointments in a transparent and merit-based manner.
  • ESTABLISHING the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission with greater powers of investigation and enforcement.
We also need a strong and effective anti-corruption body that can combat the cancer of corruption without fear or favour. Before the end of the year, I will table a Parliamentary Bill to establish the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, with greater powers of investigation and enforcement. The commission’s oversight structure has been modelled after the successful ICAC in Hong Kong.
  • ESTABLISHING the Special Complaints Commission to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of enforcement agencies.
I also intend to complete the establishment of a Special Complaints Commission to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of enforcement agencies.
  • STRENGTHENING and enlarging the Social Safety Net to ensure aid to all, regardless of race and religion.
I have long spoken about the need to ensure that the fruits of growth are more equitably distributed. In the recent Budget, I explained the Government’s commitment to strengthening and enlarging the Social Safety Net. We will speed up work on this front to help poor and disadvantaged Malaysians, regardless of background, race or religion. I will also work to ensure that tangible results can begin to be enjoyed in Iskandar, as well as the development corridor initiatives around the country.
  • HOLDING a Barisan Nasional convention to improve inter-racial and inter-religious relations.
I would like to see the Government and Barisan renew their commitment towards building a united and harmonious nation. Society has seen an alarming decline in interracial and inter-religious relations.

Various issues have cropped up which threaten to tear the very fabric of Malaysian life. We need to tackle these issues head-on, through dialogue; deal with the issues constructively and even-handedly; ensure greater clarity and certainty for the people; and focus on the points that unite us, rather than the points that divide us.

For this reason, I will convene a Barisan Nasional convention early next year. This is a long-term effort that I hope to kick-start and continue to contribute towards.

A good leader DO NOT abondan his party and people in bad times. BN is suffering a really BAD TIME now. Pal lah ONCE AGAIN proved that he is a "good man" , when he announce a short but essential To-do-list before he resign.

A MESSAGE FROM DSAAB FOR THE RAKYAT

My current term as president of Umno ends in March next year. There are several initiatives I intend to see through before I leave office. These initiatives are important because they are necessary to move our country forward. These initiatives are needed to regain our country’s competitiveness. They are necessary to enable our nation and our society to face the challenges that the world has in store for us.

I ask all Malaysians to unite and join me in working towards making Malaysia a better place

ESTABLISHING the Judicial Appointments Commission to enhance the stature of the judiciary.

ESTABLISHING the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission with greater powers of investigation and enforcement.

ESTABLISHING the Special Complaints Commission to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of enforcement agencies.

STRENGTHENING and enlarging the Social Safety Net to ensure aid to all, regardless of race and religion.

HOLDING a Barisan Nasional convention to improve inter-racial and inter-religious relations.

Refering to the to-do-list above, i read with interest a article published in The Star Online. Its on 10 things UMNO must do. ( Ref : Thestar.com.my)

1. Be a true champion of Malays.

Somewhere along the way, the Umno train became derailed in terms of serving the genuine and pressing needs of the Malay masses. Instead the focus came to rest on things such as contracts, companies, cuts, equity stakes and such - in other words the enrichment of a relative few in the community.

Sometimes such things have been at the expense of the interests of the country when businessmen (including some from other communities) got deals which were too good from the Government. That is already bad but this was coupled with less attention and intelligent effort on vital areas such as education which has set the clock back in some cases.

2. Put a full stop to money politics.
The best way of doing this is to simply get the Anti-Corruption Agency into the act to stop vote buying and tampering. It is against the law to buy votes, so let the law enforcers in - it cannot be kept as purely a party matter and only for the party’s disciplinary committee to deal with. Only if such measures are taken will Umno members and the general public be convinced that the leadership wants to do away with money politics once and for all.
3. Renew the fight against corruption.

The evidence of corruption is all over the place if one cares to look for it - people living beyond their means, questionable contracts, strange land deals and so on. These are all at great cost to the nation and an immediate stop must be put to such things.

Measures already considered for more independent law enforcement as well as prosecution of offenders must be put in place to give real meaning and effect to fighting corruption instead of just lip service.

4. Put serious checks against patronage and its abuse.

It may be just too much to expect the nexus between business and politics to be nixed just like that. But certainly a lot, lot more can be done to ensure that patronage politics does not do undue damage to the interests of the country.

One easy way of doing that is to ensure that the awarding of contracts is more transparent and follows guidelines. The next point shows how this can be done.

5. Set benchmarks for all contracts and procurements.
There are international benchmarks available for the procurement of all manner of goods and services. It is also possible to employ consultants at a fraction of the cost of a project to determine benchmark prices and to oversee the project to see that it is finished according to acceptable standards. Doing such simple things ensures that the Government never needs pay excessive sums for goods and services while ensuring that they are up to international standards.
6. Be less racial.
It must be pretty obvious by now that Malaysian communities are not taking too well to the tried and tested means used by the politicians of yore - race - of increasing their appeal to their own communities. If that does not change, there is great risk of polarising some sections of the voting public - and these days you can’t afford that, as the not-so-recent elections showed. Policies these days must appeal to the broader mass of Malaysians.
7. Be more tolerant in terms of religion.

Religious issues have often been deliberately manipulated by all shades of politicians for their own narrow benefits, not of the community even but of the politicians who seek to be champions of their own race and religion.

There are real problems of religion, especially when it comes to things like conversion and the rights of individuals. These won’t go away if their honest, frank and considered discussion is suppressed - they merely surface somewhere else. Politicians must facilitate the discussion of religious issues rather than suppress it, in the spirit of acceptance and tolerance.

8. Cut the emotive content in language issues.

Long ago, Bahasa Malaysia was accepted as the national language. There is no issue there. What we have to do is to think of how we can get our people to equip themselves with everything that they need to thrive in a very competitive world.

One of that is mastery of the English language and we must not let our affection for the Malay, Chinese and Tamil languages stand in the way of that. If we can’t agree, then perhaps the best way is to give people genuine choice in the kind of education they want. As long as language gets politicised, it’s going to be very difficult to move forward.

9. Become more accommodative rather than confrontational.

The old mode of working among the BN coalition was to shout and to draw the lines and this was especially so with Umno. The approach was well, rather confrontational.

And, of course, when the lines are drawn, they are pretty difficult to redraw. It would be far better to seek reconciliation through accommodation and consultation instead. In that mode, chances for solution - rather than stop-gap measures - are infinitely better.

10. Be a true champion of Malaysians.
The time has come for all parties to think of themselves as Malaysians and see how we all as a group can move forward. If we help all the disadvantaged amongst us, automatically the most disadvantaged communities will be helped more.

honestly i am/was not very much into 'street protest' idea. I believe Malaysia is far more civilized for that.

BUT NOW

Learning from the change of tide in my malaysia, i bow to the reality, 'SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE TUNE WHEN THERE IS A NEED"

Talking about street protests and demos, we rarely get to see MIC(BN) in ACTION, as they always give priorities to round table or closed door discussions to get(try) things solved. So the leaders TALK and we(RAKYAT) enjoys/ suffers the outcome.

This 'style' caused them alot in GE-12. The oppositions managed to spin it and the rakyats were infected by amnesia. Opposition's OPEN STYLE seems more attractive and most importantly gave a feel of PARTICIPATION for the rakyat.

THE RAKYAT ALWAYS RIGHT

The tide changed. They want everything to be transparent. they want be a part of it.

A good political party should walk in a style preferred by rakyat. Since GE-12 MIC via their youth wing become very vocal.

And, this is their walk in protest against temple demolition.

MIC protests against demolition

About 100 MIC members demonstrated here to protest the demolition of a Hindu temple by the Ampang Jaya Municipal council recently.

The crowd, which included Indian NGOs, protested at the main gate of the Selangor secretariat building yesterday morning.

Organiser T. Mohan, who is MIC Youth chief, said the PKR government had lied to the people that they would not tear down any places of worship.

“They said no temples would be destroyed, what happened now?” Mohan told reporters the MIC was unhappy with the state government’s action to demolish the Sri Mahakaliaman temple after he presented a memorandum to Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s political secretary, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

The 19-year-old temple was built on forest reserve. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times between 2002 and 2007.

Asked why the MIC did not solve the issue then, Mohan said the party had taken action and that was why the temple was rebuilt.

I know some will choose to ask, 'where were they in the past, when so many hindu temples demolished nationwide'. A respond from the MIC nation youth coordinator :

“There are so many temples without permit, that is a fact, we know it, but you (the state government) have promised not tear down any temples.

“I can tell you 50% to 60% of temples in the country don’t have proper permits and the (temple) committees may have not have been registered too, but that doesn’t mean you can tear down their temples,” he said.

MIC had always fought against the demolition of temples, citing as an example the party’s protest to former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo when seven or eight temples in Puchong were demolished, including a controversial one in Padang Jawa, just before the March 8 general election.

Now, like many i am hoping for a solution for this matter for good. Not only from BN but also from PR who is in power in 5 states.

Dont just shut / close this with 'words' . I think indians who voted for PR in selangor are not going to buy it anymore.

FOR MIC

Now, its the time to prove your sincerity and relevants . You walk towards the solution, and the rakyat will walk with you.

FOR BN

Now, its the time to prove that BARISAN NASIONAL cares for EVERYONE

FOR PR

Welcome to political war zone. Its easy to point out other's mistakes. The real struggle is, how you open to critics and strong enough to rectify your mistakes. Only that can prove your credibility!!!

MIC's WALK : TEMPLE DEMOLISHING ISSUE

HINDU TEMPLE DEMOLISHED!!! The 3 letter magical spell that made the indian community to vote against BN. Am i exaggerating? Those who watched the DVD/VCD's that contains the clips of such events ( generously given out for free by PR ) knows what i mean.

One can give 1001 reasons and explanations, but this issue is far beyond that to be just settle by WORDS.

Many ( everyone) asked where is MIC? What they are doing? If we talking about the past, go and ask this questions to the particular( demolished temples) temple's PIC ( person/group in charge) what was the real reason and what MIC actually did/ struggled.

But, as i said b4, this issue is far beyond that to be settle by words/ explanations.

WE WANT A SOLUTION TO PUT STOP TO THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!

MIC walked their talk and the community's wish in KL.

Temples in draft plan will not be demolished

ALL Hindu temples on government land situated in commercial zones in the Draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 would not be demolished, Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said.

He said if temples situated on government land were affected by development projects undertaken by the Government, they would be given an alternative site for relocation, reported Malaysia Nanban.

He added that prior approval from City Hall was required for new temples to be built, even on private land.

Speaking to reporters on Friday after meeting representatives of the Malaysian Hindu Council over the draft, Saravanan said the ministry would allow the various communities to build their houses of worship in housing estates.
A message from YB Dato Saravanan ,
FT Dept. Minister , MIC Info Chief

“If you want to help sincerely, come and talk to the relevant authorities instead of using the media and the blogs to create hype,” Saravanan said.

He said this in the wake of articles published on the allegations of 120 temples missing from the Draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020.

“I challenge these people who make allegations to come up with the list of the missing temples. (Ref :Saravanan: Don’t use religious issues for political gain)

Of course there was no appreciation message or at least an acknowledgment from "those who" only interested in giving out anti-MIC statements ( claiming that they represent the community)

Well, a message for them from me ( a member of the community and rakyat malaysia), MIC, under the leadership of Dato Seri S. Samy vellu progressing with their walk on emulating the plan above nationwide. And its for the rakyat to judge who is walking ppl's wishes and demands for REAL!!!

My good friend Premnath posted a respond to the outrageous statement from Mr. Thanenthiran. (REF: Don't cross the line, Thanenthiran!)

There was a news posted at Hindraf's website on a Recent temple demolishing in selangor BY PAKATAN RAKYAT who championed the temple issue during GE-12. ( a very well staged drama to win indian's vote) ( Ref: Ulu langat temple demolished) ( REF :Bah Humbug!)

According to the post ( with photo's), the temple committee was approached by "pakatan rakyat ppl" and shamelessly requested or shall i say begged them not to inform this issue to the people.

NOW , WHO TO TRUST? THOSE WHO PLAYED WITH OUR EMOTIONS JUST TO WIN OUR VOTES??? OR THOSE WHO LOST ALMOST EVERYTHING AFTER GE-12 AND STILL WALKING THEIR TALK SINCERELY FOR THE COMMUNITY!!!

MIC- WALKING THE TALK

Greetings,

The malaysian indians denied MIC forever? that is a very subjective question. But more then 50% of them voted against it during GE-12. thats a fact. That caused MIC to loose their power/voice in almost all the state governments and it is forced to keep things rolling with only 3 parliament members and 3 cabinet reps.

Can they perform with much reduced power, representatives and support? Especially now, when the demands from rakyat is in the peak. Many predicted that MIC is yesterdays news.

Despite all the rotten eggs that have been thrown at them, MIC managed to survive. MIC is still on track to walk for the rakyat!!! and thats a fact!!!

The immediate/effective responds from MIC in all the current issues shows that MIC CARES even after many claims that Indian community rejected them. and thats a fact!!!

The number of people seeking assist at MIC HQ and MIC service centers nationwide increased . And thats a fact!!! ( Ref: Indian folk back to seek help, says Samy )

while all this happening, many equipped/CURSED with ONLY POLITICAL INTEREST choose to confuse the rakyat against MIC.

FOR THEM:
THIS IS A RACE, A RACE FOR WINNING THE RAKYAT'S SUPPORT. IT SHOULD BE BASED ON PERFORMANCE . NOT BY SOME CHEAP MIND GAME TO CONFUSE PEOPLE TO DENY MIC AND THEIR SINCERE WALK FOR RAKYAT!!!

LET MIC WALK THEIR TALK, AND 'YOU' WALK YOUR, THE RAKYAT WILL JUDGE!!!

FOR MIC:

Now, i continue with my post on MIC's walk for the rakyat -3 .

What MIC done for the past 51 years? Thats what almost everyone who visits my blog asking. Well It'll be hell of a long list ppl. But since many of us choose to deny whatever MIC did in the past, i choose to update what is MIC doing right NOW. ( what i able to find out)

MIC's success with weak students

KUALA LUMPUR: An MIC effort to help academically-weak and problematic Indian secondary students has paid off.

The MIC-run Yayasan Strategic Social's family development unit head K.A. Gunah (picture) said the party's Plus-8 programme had proven to be a resounding success by helping 5,100 students in 74 secondary schools.

MIC: Free Hindraf five

PETALING JAYA: The MIC has reiterated its call for the Government to free five Hindraf leaders from Internal Security Act (ISA) detention.

Party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said that he would raise the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi again, despite having done so many times.

Tekun Briefing

More briefings on the availability of small business loans were held in different parts of Perak. Recently three briefing sessions were held where two sessions were organized by the Perak MIC Youth, and the other by the Tambun Barisan Nasional.

The Star (Letters Section)

SEPTEMBER 16 had come and gone. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim failed to unseat Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as the Prime Minister.

As a Muslim, Anwar should accept that he can plan, but God decides.

From the very beginning what he did was morally wrong, although politics by a Machiavelian standard is apolitical.

It may be the accepted norms in other developing countries, but Malaysia has come of age and our politicians should show maturity and dignity when clamouring for political power.

Anwar should have the patience to wait for the next general election and let the people decide. He already has control over five states and should concentrate on them by showing to the people how the Opposition governs these states.

In a democracy it is the people who actually hold and wield power and not the politicians. For in the words of Abraham Lincon, “democracy is government by the people, of the people and for the people.”

On March 8, the people decided to cut Barisan Nasional’s two-third majority and yet BN accepted the defeat graciously and respected the will of the people.

When Anwar won in the Permatang Pauh by-election, it was again an indication of the people’s will and again BN accepted it in good faith.

Instead of being arrogant, Anwar should be humble with his victory in Permatang Pauh. Buying over BN representatives runs counter to his anti-corruption campaign.

A man of virtue will not resort to unethical means to meet his objectives and he has indeed lost the respect of certain quarters.

As a member of the public, I call on Anwar to close ranks and work together in the interest of the country.

As a former Deputy Prime Minister and Umno strongman, he has access to Pak Lah and can contribute in terms of ideas etc.

As the Opposition Leader, he can play a constructive role by bringing up pressing issues which affect the rakyat directly.

What the people need is less politicking as there are many urgent matters affecting them, such as illegal immigrants, spiralling food prices, wayward youths, the education system, etc.etc.

I was in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a short stint when Pak Lah was the Minister. I had the opportunity to study him at close range.

In all honesty, Pak Lah is a God-fearing man, hardworking, humble and well-liked by civil servants. I believe he never yearned to be the Prime Minister. Tun Dr Mahathir probably saw the good values in Pak Lah and passed the premiership to him to the surprise of some hopefuls.

Being the Prime Minister is not as easy as being a Deputy Prime Minister.

Indeed, heavy is the head that wears the crown,as Pak lah has probably found out.

But as he said at a press conference, ”... being Prime Minister is not main-main and olok-olok..it is serious business...”

I believe Pak Lah is a man of his word. When the time comes he will honour his words and pass the baton to his annointed successor Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Meanwhile, let Pak Lah do his job in peace.

Its all about ISA in malaysiakini today. Sin Chew reporter released, Anwar to Pak Lah: Let's meet, Minister: Journalist to be blamed too, A vigil for 'Saint' Teresa, Candlelight vigil in Bukit Aman lasts 12 mins, Special Branch: She's held for stoking religious tension, and so on....

Do we need ISA? Thats always depends on what it is been used on........

ISA, Is it appropriate to be used on this three cases? (3 ISA arrests : what they did?)

Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Said - TINDAKAN ISA WAJAR

( more ...TINDAKAN ISA WAJAR)

well, The home minister justified his action by saying " tindakan itu dibuat setelah polis mempunyai cukup bukti bahawa jika langkah itu tidak diambil ia boleh mencetuskan ketegangan kaum dan mengancam keselamatan negara"

Current situation, Their days are numbered , thats what barisan rakyat ( YB DSAI) has been saying on BN since GE-12. The BN government is no longer being loved as much as they used to be by rakyat.

This ISA arrests can be used as a tool to topple the government by BR. It can be used to hike the hatred of rakyat on BN. It can even be used to create quandary among BN component parties. powerful backlash from Rakyat.

Despite this major risks, the home minister made a very bold move to use ISA on 3 ( prominent bloger, media and a opp MP) .

Can we consider that it was Vital for the unity and stability ???

One of my good friend emailed me
( respond to my post :ISA = A WEAK GOVERNMENT???)

Dear Punithan,

I want to quote a famous saying from Winston Churchill,

THE TREE OF LIBERTY MUST BE REFRESH FROM TIME TO TIME BY THE BLOOD OF PATRIOTS AND TYRANTS ALIKE.

Hopefully you understand my point of view from this quote.

Also, 99.9% percent of the all governments worldwide including USA / UK / SINGAPORE / CHINA / JAPAN / INDIA have their own versions of ISA ( Terrorism Act / Tada at etc ). Does that mean it's a weak government?

For nation's stability some harsh decisions must be made. Spare the rod , spoil the child.

I am not saying we need to use because everybody uses. We use it because we need to use it. Something like cutting of a gangrene in order to save the body*to quote Tun Dr M*. Some harsh methods have to be done in order to have stability in the system.

The rakyat had voiced out their dissatisfaction in this issue.... So The Home Minister should be transparent on the evidence that 'forced' him to use ISA. Lets see if it can undo/ mend this backlash.

Gerakan calls for ISA to be amended or abolished

Gerakan acting present Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon has called on the government to either amend or abolish the Internal Security Act.

He said the existence of the act painted a very negative perception of the country to the outside world, adding that it was also irrelevant considering the country had a sound judicial system in place.

“It is time this act be seriously looked at. Gerakan strongly urges the government to abolish the ISA once and for all.

“There is no reason why anyone should be subject to the provisions of this act which simply means detention without trial when the authorities can use the judicial system instead,” he said after opening the state Gerakan convention here.

Koh said the judicial system was far more transparent in terms of the legal and social aspects as compared to the ISA.
“When you detain someone under the ISA, it gives room for people to draw all kinds of conclusions and provides plenty of room for manipulation. ( more ...Gerakan calls for ISA to be amended or abolished)

PRESS STATEMENT FROM MIC PRESIDENT

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu on Saturday appealed to the Government to release Sin Chew Daily News reporter Tan Hoon Cheng who was arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) on Friday.

In a statement Saturday, he said he would ask Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar to immediately release Tan.

He said by doing so certain elements will not blame the Government for curtailing press freedom.

Samy Vellu added that Tan is a young reporter and only reported what was said. Therefore he appealed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to release her.

Try RPK and Teresa Kok under court of law, not ISA

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) today urged the government to immediately release prominent blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok who have been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

TI-M president Tan Sri Dr Ramon V. Navaratnam said the government should charge the individuals who allegedly violated laws in an open court, instead of flexing its muscles through the ISA as it would negate much of the country's progress.

He said the act had eroded efforts in promoting transparency, acountability and freedom of speech in the country.

"This retrograde action will be severely criticised by most fair-minded Malaysians and foreigners, and is a major blow to the more liberal policy of the country," he told Bernama here.

Besides Raja Petra and Kok, Sin Chew daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng was also arrested yesterday for allegedly sparking racial tensions.
However, Tan was released at 2.30pm today.
