UMNO on NEP

BUMIPUTERA'S EQUITY TARGET YET TO ACHIVE........

There will not be a total removal of the New Economic Policy (NEP), Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s remarks about the gradual liberalisation of the NEP should not be construed as a call to totally remove it.

The policy was introduced in 1970 to help put bumiputras on par with other races in terms of the share of the economic pie, as well as in terms of education, business participation and work opportunities.

Muhyiddin said the bumiputra community had yet to achieve the 30% equity stake that remains the target of the NEP.

AGREES AND REJECTS............

Umno Youth agrees that the New Economic Policy (NEP) needs a fresh approach, but it rejects any suggestion to abolish the bumiputra equity policy.

The movement’s economic bureau chairman, Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican, said MCA vice-president Datuk Liow Tiong Lai’s suggestion on Monday to abolish the mandatory 30% bumiputra equity in public-listed companies was ad-hoc and drastic.

He said a “Genuine Partnership Initiative” to create better and more equal business ties among the various races would be a better alternative in today’s difficult economic environment.

Reezal said he hoped the proposal would be taken up by the Government to look into incentive and tax-exemption mechanisms that were similar to those given to companies awarded MSC status.

He added that the initiative should have sufficient incentives to encourage entrepreneurs to develop better economic cooperation and interaction among those in the multi-ethnic business community in the country.

“This cooperation could become a basis to open up minds to compete in the free-market private sector,” he said.

SO ITS ABOUT TIME.................WILL THIS BE NAJIB'S 1ST WALK AS PM???

Najib had said in a Bloomberg interview that he was working towards the gradual liberalisation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in the not too distant future.

He said there should be gradual liberalisation of the NEP as and when bumiputras begin to feel more confident of competing with others domestically and globally.

Najib added that he was glad to note more bumiputras were becoming confident of competing and doing well.

POLICIES ARE MEANINGLESS IF THE DELIVERY SYSTEM STAYS UNREFORMED...

MIC’s Information chief Datuk S.K. Devamany said it would be good to review the NEP.

“I hope it can be done in a manner which will not affect unity and harmony of the country,” said the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

He added that apart from Government policies, the next aspect which had to be looked into was the delivery system to “ensure that the ordinary man can feel the effects of the policy.”

VOICE OF NEW MCA LEADERHIP........

MCA vice-president Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said this was especially important as the world faced a global scale financial crisis.

“The equity pie should be more liberalised as multi-racial cooperation is of utmost importance. Genuine partnership is more meaningful than equity per se,” Liow said at the MIC Deepavali open house at PWTC yesterday.

He said the corporate equity share requirement between bumiputras and non-bumiputras should not be at the expense of competitiveness.

“We can have equity share but do not limit it by percentages. It is time we look at merit and the competitiveness of a company. Equity share has to open up, so that competitiveness becomes the priority,” he said.

Liow, who is Health Minister, said a cohesive working relationship between bumiputras and non-bumiputras was more important to ensure consistent economic growth.

He said the Government had taken many measures to improve competitiveness, such as allowing 100% foreign equity or any amount of local/ foreign or bumiputra/non-bumiputra mix in the manufacturing sector.A similar move should be expanded to the trading and services sector as well, he said.

MALAYSIAKINI REPORTED THAT PAS'S STAND ON THIS DIFFERENT FROM PKR'S. I WONDER WHAT IS PAKATAN'S STAND ON THIS?

PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub said that the 30-percent equity must be retained and defended "even if the target has been reached"

i would like to quote YB DATUK ZAID IBRAHIM ( former de facto Law Minister)

“You can still be a champion for your race and think of the country.”

"You can have a race-based party but you don’t have to be racist bigots,”

YES, I do love to see sign boards displayed in malay, chiness and tamil.

BUT, how can this contribute to the walk towards BANGSA MALAYSIA?

LANGUAGE is the most practical tool, to be used to UNITE rakyat berbilang bangsa in Malaysia.

In that case, what is the problem having BM-only sign boards ???

I came across an intresting article on this today - Lets renungkan this matter........

Apabila bercakap tentang perjuangan hak asasi manusia kita amat berkiblatkan negara-negara maju.

Looks like some real desperate move to me….. … I am referring to a recent blogpost of my LOYAL blog follower lazarus . After a few unsuccessful personal attacks, now comes a CHEAP so called sex scandal. ( Ref : http://darkjustice-lazarus.blogspot.com/)

Well, In the spirit of the holly and scared festival of Deepavali, I'll forgive your sins my fellow Malaysian brother.

But do remember one thing, you may get away with this now, perhaps for you its just some kind of stupid joke., But you'll be judged by him(god).

Take care, HAPPY DEEPAVALI

A good leader/party should always open to critics, accept their faults and rectify it.

Today I came across a speech by the DPM- in- waiting Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin in the star.

Barisan Nasional needs a new working format to be more accessible to
the people
, Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
“I feel that we need to bring forward a new Barisan format because the present one is a bit loose. We only work together during certain times like election campaigns.

“After that, you act on your own. MCA, Umno and MIC go their own
ways. “We don’t seem to work like one party to solve the nation’s problems,” he said after presenting a talk at Universiti Sains Malaysia yesterday.

“If there is a Chinese, Indian or Malay problem, it should not be left entirely to the MCA or MIC or Umno to solve. “We must all come to help because we share a common vision. “However, how we have been working so far is (parties) only dealing with their own communities.”

“I think the most important thing is to make Barisan more workable from the national to the state and importantly, division level where Barisan actually functions in dealing with the each voter.

“For example, if we have one Barisan office with all races working
together and dealing with the problems of a particular community, then this creates a picture of a new Barisan and everyone helps each other and it’s not just focused on racial lines,” he said.

I really wish Tan Sri MY will play a ideal role in BN/UMNO walking towards this most awaited changes.

P/s: Well, in kawasan parliament (telok kemang) where I am from, I see UMNO,MCA,MIC and Gerakan used to work together constantly, even now, after BN lost parliament telok kemang. Pusat perkhidmatan (kawasan parlimen telok kemang) Dato Sothinathan is still functioning and performing as good as before.

HINDRAF'S ARREST

AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN……… Yesterday Malaysiakini reported that 11 hindraf supporters detained at puterajaya.

Why? 1 six years old child accompanied by her mother and 9 “concern people” wanted to submit a deepavali invitation to PM.

The way the police handled this is abit to harsh... What is the urgent need to arrest them, especially a 6 years old child? But, I am sure they will justify their action as usual.

I do Respect and admire “ this group of makkal shakti”. They did a big scaled wake up call for Malaysian Indians. NOW, even MIC ans had bowed to that fact.

For a group that won a image that they represent Indians, they should be more careful and sensitive.

1st PM’s Hari raya open house. This incident caused many to to comment negatively about this group who called them a true hindraf. I do felt the pain as I am an Indian too.

Now a situation of detention of 6 years old child, 3 days before deepavali. Its a shame to drag her into this issues. She hardly understand what the hell is going around her.

PM is on a official trip to china for 3 days. So what is the whole point of this?

It’s been understood and agreed for what hindraf is fighting for. They have their right to voice out but need to consider that we should not touch the sentiment of others as well as treasuring our own. It’s a festival time. It's a celebration time.

LETS JUDGE THIS RATIONALLY .

Deepavali means "the array of lights." "Thamasomaa jyotirgamaya"(Lead me from darkness to light) is an Upanishadic prayer: This means that where there is darkness, light is needed.

Sorrow is one form of darkness. Peacelessness is another. Loss is another. Disappointment is one form of darkness. Misery is yet another. Lack of enthusiasm is another. All these are different forms of darkness. To get rid of the darkness of sorrow, you have to light the lamp of happiness. To dispel the darkness of disease, you have to install the light of health. To get over the darkness oflosses and failures, you have to usher in the light of prosperity.

Swami Vivekananda, the great Hindu savant, said that freedom is the first condition of life. And the light of Deepavali is also the light of freedom -- freedom from control, freedom from tyranny and freedom from all that artificially divides humanity.

We should not lead a life of selfishness. That is a wasteful life. It is only in community life, we can you reach out THE LIGHTS ABOVE. Give happiness and take happiness. Happiness is not a one-way traffic, it is a two-way process of give and take.

Lets forgets and forgives the wrongs done by others. Lets breath the air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere.

LETS CELEBRATE THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS, LOVE AND UNITY

HAPPY DEEPAVALI TO ALL !!!

THE MIC has called on the Govern-ment to expedite the setting up of an inter-race relations council mooted by the party to discuss race-based issues, reported Tamil Nesan.
Party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, in a statement on Saturday, said the council could be formed even before the proposed Race Relations Act was tabled in Parlia-ment.
He said the MIC hoped that the council would be set up soon because it could end the bickering among various quarters on racial matters.
He added that the council could be incorporated into the Act at a later stage. He said the council should also be given powers to ensure its proposals were accepted and implemented by the Government.

I DON’T THINK WE RAKYAT NEED THAT. WE DO UNDERSTAND AND RESPECT EACH OTHER’S SENTMENTS AND FEELINGS ( MOST OF US ATLEAST)

REFERRING TO THE NON-STOP "TEMPLE ISSUES" , I THINK THIS IS VITAL FOR THE AUTHORITIES…..

Referring to my previous post :

MALAYSIANS, They have a different mindset now. Those days, where we used to get impressed by world tallest building and cyber city are long gone. Their expectation level evolved now.

They want to see a government that not only brings development, but a government that is transparent, democratic and fair in dealing with national issues. They want a government that is not perceived as looking after the interests of one community, but of all.

As the ruling government, its barisan's responsibility to EVOLVE / reform accordingly.

Few days ago, our PM, Pak lah addressed it in his 5 to-do-list. ( ref :A MESSAGE FROM PAK LAH TO THE RAKYAT)

I would like to see the Government and Barisan renew their commitment towards building a united and harmonious nation. Society has seen an alarming decline in interracial and inter-religious relations.

Various issues have cropped up which threaten to tear the very fabric of Malaysian life. We need to tackle these issues head-on, through dialogue; deal with the issues constructively and even-handedly; ensure greater clarity and certainty for the people; and focus on the points that unite us, rather than the points that divide us.

For this reason, I will convene a Barisan Nasional convention early next year. This is a long-term effort that I hope to kick-start and continue to contribute towards.

Race based parties should dance a changed tune. They should be championing the causes of the community that they represent and will articulate their frustrations to the government while, at the same time, not neglecting the other communities.
It has to be a bit more multi-racial. Things have to be issue-centric, rather than ethno-centric.

FOR THE RAKYAT:

Since our expectation level evolved, the level of acceptance and sensitivity should evolve as well.

ACCEPTANCE and SENSITIVITY
We should learn to accept the changes. YES we should voice out our disagreements, but we should also acknowledge the changes.
The country's social-economical development is like to-be-baked-pie. When our NEED expands, we should ask for a bigger pie to be baked, NOT asking the piece that belongs to OTHERS.

RELATED MIC NEWS : ( 10/08/2008)

MIC to shed racist approach in tackling problems

The MIC will shed the racial approach and adopt a multi-racial stance in dealing with the people’s problems, said party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
He said problems facing the Indian community could only be resolved through a non-racist approach, as evident after the 2008 general election.

Samy Vellu said there must be understanding and respect among all races and a new give-and-take attitude.

“The MIC will continue to fight for the Indian community when its rights are infringed. But we will only ask what is rightfully ours, without infringing on the rights of the other communities,” he told reporters here today.

Referring to my previous post MULTI RACIAL MALAYSIA : A BLESSING NOT A CURSE!!!

Championing one particular race & being a racist ..... differences?

“You can still be a champion for your race and think of the country.”

"You can have a race-based party but you don’t have to be racist bigots,”

MY MALAYSIA is a multi-ethnic, multi- cultural and multilingual society. YES, we have everything. Its a GIFT to be born as a malaysian.

We used to see this 'multi' thingys as a blessing, the world envied us for this. Malaysia .... another word for social harmony and a peace loving country.

BUT

WHAT WENT WRONG NOW??? IS THIS BLESSING SLOWLY TRANSFORMING TO A CURSE???

I read with interest and pain a news report and a so called "cerpen sastera"

First

HINDRAF has been declared illegal! ( Ref : Gov't declares Hindraf an illegal organisation)
The home minister found the organization's activities contravened the Societies Act 1966 and if left unchecked, the organization could pose a threat to public order, peace, security and morality in Malaysia.

Well, its the responsibility on home minster to do what it takes to safeguard the racial harmony.

HINDRAF, unregistered, fractured, not properly organized and with a conflicting leadership structure. BUT, we have to accept the fact that it is not just an organization, IT IS the VOICE of minority malaysian indians who want to be treated with respect and enjoy equality and a fair share of the national wealth to advance economically like everybody else.

There was a comment post by brandan kuppusamy in thestar a week ago.

USE CARROT NOT STICK

The reality is there is an urgent need for both Hindraf and the authorities to step back and find common grounds and engage in a meaningful dialogue that would benefit both the Tamil poor and the Barisan which needs their support.

If the Barisan is serious about re-inventing itself and regaining lost ground it has to reach out and engage, not condemn or alienate.

The Barisan can transform itself and be a patron of the Tamil underclass and it only takes sympathy, wisdom and understanding to form a new partnership with the Tamil poor.

Threatening and showing the big stick are counter-productive and would only worsen the situation.

It is time to talk softly. ( Read more : USE CARROT NOT STICK)

I do agree with Mr. Brandan's view, but the term 'tamil underclass' is best to be mentioned as Malaysian Indians.

Second,

A so called "cerpen sastera" published in utusan malaysia (Ref: POLITIK BARU YB J) .
IT IS ONE PIECE OF **** THAT CAN REALLY CAUSE CHAOS!!!

The only ACCEPTABLE AND RATIONAL point in this cerpen is,

" Ini soal persepsi YB. Persepsinya begitulah. Hakikatnya YB tidak membenci Melayu tidak juga membenci Islam. YB sekadar memperjuangkan kepentingan kaum YB. Tidak salah YB berbuat demikian. Kalau YB tidak memperjuangkan kepentingan kaum YB sendiri, siapa lagi. Tetapi cara YB itu barangkali disalahertikannya

A simple question to all, how many of us Indians (Tamils) and or Hindus know how to speak, read and write our own mother tongue? How many of us stand proud telling that we are Indians or Hindus? How many of us when we meet our fellow Indian friends, say Vanakam, or even converse in Tamil or any other Indian Languages? IF your answer is a 'YES', then you should be proud of yourself that you have not lost your identity. Look at our fellow Malay and Chinese friends, they are so fluent with their respective mother tongues, and they are proud
speaking their languages. On the other hand, we Indian are lacking on this.

Why am I saying this? Well, the reason is simply because I would like to contribute towards improving awareness amongst our Indian community. I have volunteered to conduct Tamil Language and Hinduism
classes. Knowledge gained, adds value whilst knowledge shared multiplies value. Gone are the days whereby the non Brahmins are prohibited to learn the vedas, in this modern world, we are all equal, we all have equal opportunities.

The Tamil language class (to speak, read and write) would be for about 3 months.Upon completion of the Tamil Language class, I would start with the Hinduism classes which comprise lessons on Saiva Sidthantham, the Thirumurai (Tamil devotional songs, such as Thevaram, Thiruvasagam, etc) and Thirumarai (the interpretation of the 4 Vedas, the stories behind them and the Baghvad Gita). These classes are continuous. All classes would be conducted in Tamil(mostly) and English.

Some points to be highlighted to our members. On a few occasions, I have been invited to houses to recite devotional songs(mostly funerals and anthiyesthi ceremonies). It is quite disappointing to know that many of the deceased family members can't even recite a simple song of the thirumurai. It is the greatest bliss for the
deceased when his/her family members recite these songs for they souls rather than a third party reciting it on behalf of the family members. It is time that we all indians realise this point and lets start learning abit about our beautiful language and religion. Lets all together prove to the world that our language and religion is not
fading off. Lets prove that it's ever glowing in our hearts and souls.

Classes are conducted at the Malaysian Hindu Sangam Building , PJS 1.
Time: Every Sunday-6.00pm to 8.00pm (Initially)
Fees: RM40.00 per month.

Those who are interested kindly email me shanthan.penta@ gmail.com
or contact me @ 0123016607.
Any persons(adults and children)are most

welcomed to join these classes.

Be proud to be an indian, be proud of our language and religion.

Nowdays everything in malaysia evolves around politics. barisan nasional, pakatan rakyat, hindraf, anwar ibrahim....................

Everyone and everything focused on political reformation. Yes, its important. But why are we (indians) closing our eyes on social reformation. are we? blogpost link (POLITICAL REFORMATION VS SOCIAL REFORMATION.)

Recently, Tamil nesan reported that, the number of Indian youths involved in various crimes has increased tremendously. ( Ref :INDIANS: CRIME RATE INCREASING AND POPULATION DECREASING !!!)

WE NEED TO REFORM/DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE....

MIC
MIC has requested for a meeting with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan to discuss the sharp rise in the number of Indian youths getting involved in crime over the past few months.

Its president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the Indian community was alarmed at the recent spate of violent crimes involving its youths, with such incidents being reported in the media almost daily. News Link (MIC wants to meet IGP over rising crime among Indians)

MIC YOUTH
MIC inviting Indian youths from all quarters to also come forward with their own proposals on how to solve this pressing problem.

Some of the recent updates on that matter :

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has called on parents to monitor their children so that they would not get involved in undesirable activities, reported Makkal Osai.

He said parents should cooperate with schools to act against the increasing number of disciplinary cases and gangsterism.

“A good upbringing by a caring family will help children become good citizens,” he said at the Prevention of Crimes seminar, adding that poverty had also resulted in many disciplinary cases and other social problems in the slums.

PUTERA MIC FORUM :
Why is there an increase in crime rate among the Indian community?’

Parents need to play a more active role in helping to reduce crime, said Johor Unity, Human Resource, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman M. Asojan.

He said it was important that parents keep an alert eye on their children so that they do not mix with the wrong crowd, and involving themselves in negative activities.

“Years ago, our parents worked hard in the estates during the day and spent a lot of time with their children after coming home from work.

“These days, parents tend to work the whole day and some even taking up two or three jobs to support the family,” he said at a Tamil forum organised by MIC Putera on the topic ‘Why is there an increase in crime rate among the Indian community?’

Asojan said there should be more communication between parents and children to build an understanding between them.

“Instead of satisfying their children’s material needs, parents should also spend more time with them so they would not be influenced by the wrong crowd,” he said.

Some 40 students gathered at the Johor Tourist Information Centre (JOTIC) as three student speakers and three guest speakers spoke on the subject, discussing the likes of parenting, religion and peers.

One student speaker, Temenggong Ibrahim Teaching Institute (IPTI) student R. Jamunari, believed more opportunities should be given to the public to attend the National Service (NS).

“I am speaking as a former NS trainee and I have learnt a lot from my experiences during the three-month period.

“The trainees are taught on development skills, positive thinking and how to blend in with the society,” she said, adding that NS may be one of the ways to curb crime.

One participant M. Surindren, 24, said he had an enjoyable time listening to the forum.

“According to one of the speakers, most of the occupants at the Simpang Renggam jail are Indians and the statistics speak clearly for itself.

“Johor has one of the highest crime rates and I hope more forums like these can be held in the future,” said the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) research assistant.

WHAT MIC DID FOR TAMIL SCHOOLS IN MALAYSIA?

Kindly refer to : http://schoolstamil.blogspot.com/

WELL NOW, I AM MORE INTERESTED IN WHAT ARE THEY DOING FOR NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE........

Putera MIC calls for donations from the public

THE Putera MIC has launched a book donation drive campaign to upgrade the libraries in Tamil schools nationwide.

“We aim to collect 5,000 books and distribute them to at least one Tamil school in each state,” said the Putera MIC national coordinator P. Kamalanathan.

The campaign will run till the end of this year and the books will be delivered to the respective schools by the beginning of next year.

He said there was a serious need for good books in Tamil schools.

“We want to help within our means. Since we can’t afford to give them tables and chairs, we are trying our best to help in our own way,” he said.

“For those who have Mandarin books or Islamic religious books, you can donate it as well and we will hand it over to Chinese or the Malay schools that need it,” Kamalanathan added.

Ministry urged to help in training more teachers

STEPS are being taken to overcome the shortage of trained teachers in 523 Tamil schools.

Human Resources Minister and MIC secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said MIC would seek the cooperation of the Education Ministry to ensure that the 1,400 temporary teachers who are currently teaching in Tamil schools across the nation would be given the opportunity to pursue the teacher’s training course during the holidays within the next four years.

He said the Education Ministry had previously approved 100 places in the course for such teachers during the holidays, but at the request of MIC, had doubled the number of places to 200.

He said, however, that MIC found this number to be insufficient and had urged the ministry to allocate at least 300 places each year for temporary teachers from Tamil schools.

He said MIC was also in the midst of identifying problems faced by partly-aided schools and was taking the necessary action to solve these issues so that they could be converted to fully-aided schools.

Today i received a blog post notification from YB Manikavasagam on this. In his post ( Ref : Notice to demolished temple issue) , he claimed that he has send his representative to identify the root cause of the problem while awaiting feedback from State Government.

A notice issued on 10th October 2008 by majilis daerah hulu selangor asking the owner/ person in charge to take action or the temple will be demolished in 7 days.

Is this approved by the state government? What the state EXCO YB Dr. Xavier got to say on this?

Who to be blamed?
The government?
or
The temple committees who still choose to ignore the importance of properly registering their temples with the authorities?

To MIC and PR Indian Reps,
WHEN ALL THIS WILL BE STOPED!!! AND RESOLVED!!! FOR GOOD???

My current term as president of Umno ends in March next year. There are several initiatives I intend to see through before I leave office. These initiatives are important because they are necessary to move our country forward. These initiatives are needed to regain our country’s competitiveness. They are necessary to enable our nation and our society to face the challenges that the world has in store for us.

I ask all Malaysians to unite and join me in working towards making Malaysia a better place

  • ESTABLISHING the Judicial Appointments Commission to enhance the stature of the judiciary.
The judiciary needs to enhance its stature and credibility in the eyes of the public. Before I end my term, I will table a Parliamentary Bill to establish a Judicial Appointments Commission. Such a Commission will propose judicial appointments in a transparent and merit-based manner.
  • ESTABLISHING the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission with greater powers of investigation and enforcement.
We also need a strong and effective anti-corruption body that can combat the cancer of corruption without fear or favour. Before the end of the year, I will table a Parliamentary Bill to establish the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, with greater powers of investigation and enforcement. The commission’s oversight structure has been modelled after the successful ICAC in Hong Kong.
  • ESTABLISHING the Special Complaints Commission to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of enforcement agencies.
I also intend to complete the establishment of a Special Complaints Commission to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of enforcement agencies.
  • STRENGTHENING and enlarging the Social Safety Net to ensure aid to all, regardless of race and religion.
I have long spoken about the need to ensure that the fruits of growth are more equitably distributed. In the recent Budget, I explained the Government’s commitment to strengthening and enlarging the Social Safety Net. We will speed up work on this front to help poor and disadvantaged Malaysians, regardless of background, race or religion. I will also work to ensure that tangible results can begin to be enjoyed in Iskandar, as well as the development corridor initiatives around the country.
  • HOLDING a Barisan Nasional convention to improve inter-racial and inter-religious relations.

Pak Lah's transition plan met a dead end. Well... human beings are gifted with the ability to PLAN. But only GOD decides. I see this as God's "design" for a better Malaysia.

A good leader DO NOT abondan his party and people in bad times. BN is suffering a really BAD TIME now. Pal lah ONCE AGAIN proved that he is a "good man" , when he announce a short but essential To-do-list before he resign.

A MESSAGE FROM DSAAB FOR THE RAKYAT

My current term as president of Umno ends in March next year. There are several initiatives I intend to see through before I leave office. These initiatives are important because they are necessary to move our country forward. These initiatives are needed to regain our country’s competitiveness. They are necessary to enable our nation and our society to face the challenges that the world has in store for us.

I ask all Malaysians to unite and join me in working towards making Malaysia a better place

ESTABLISHING the Judicial Appointments Commission to enhance the stature of the judiciary.

ESTABLISHING the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission with greater powers of investigation and enforcement.

ESTABLISHING the Special Complaints Commission to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of enforcement agencies.

STRENGTHENING and enlarging the Social Safety Net to ensure aid to all, regardless of race and religion.

HOLDING a Barisan Nasional convention to improve inter-racial and inter-religious relations.

Refering to the to-do-list above, i read with interest a article published in The Star Online. Its on 10 things UMNO must do. ( Ref : Thestar.com.my)

1. Be a true champion of Malays.

Somewhere along the way, the Umno train became derailed in terms of serving the genuine and pressing needs of the Malay masses. Instead the focus came to rest on things such as contracts, companies, cuts, equity stakes and such - in other words the enrichment of a relative few in the community.

Sometimes such things have been at the expense of the interests of the country when businessmen (including some from other communities) got deals which were too good from the Government. That is already bad but this was coupled with less attention and intelligent effort on vital areas such as education which has set the clock back in some cases.

2. Put a full stop to money politics.
The best way of doing this is to simply get the Anti-Corruption Agency into the act to stop vote buying and tampering. It is against the law to buy votes, so let the law enforcers in - it cannot be kept as purely a party matter and only for the party’s disciplinary committee to deal with. Only if such measures are taken will Umno members and the general public be convinced that the leadership wants to do away with money politics once and for all.
3. Renew the fight against corruption.

The evidence of corruption is all over the place if one cares to look for it - people living beyond their means, questionable contracts, strange land deals and so on. These are all at great cost to the nation and an immediate stop must be put to such things.

Measures already considered for more independent law enforcement as well as prosecution of offenders must be put in place to give real meaning and effect to fighting corruption instead of just lip service.

4. Put serious checks against patronage and its abuse.

It may be just too much to expect the nexus between business and politics to be nixed just like that. But certainly a lot, lot more can be done to ensure that patronage politics does not do undue damage to the interests of the country.

One easy way of doing that is to ensure that the awarding of contracts is more transparent and follows guidelines. The next point shows how this can be done.

5. Set benchmarks for all contracts and procurements.
There are international benchmarks available for the procurement of all manner of goods and services. It is also possible to employ consultants at a fraction of the cost of a project to determine benchmark prices and to oversee the project to see that it is finished according to acceptable standards. Doing such simple things ensures that the Government never needs pay excessive sums for goods and services while ensuring that they are up to international standards.
6. Be less racial.
It must be pretty obvious by now that Malaysian communities are not taking too well to the tried and tested means used by the politicians of yore - race - of increasing their appeal to their own communities. If that does not change, there is great risk of polarising some sections of the voting public - and these days you can’t afford that, as the not-so-recent elections showed. Policies these days must appeal to the broader mass of Malaysians.
7. Be more tolerant in terms of religion.

Religious issues have often been deliberately manipulated by all shades of politicians for their own narrow benefits, not of the community even but of the politicians who seek to be champions of their own race and religion.

There are real problems of religion, especially when it comes to things like conversion and the rights of individuals. These won’t go away if their honest, frank and considered discussion is suppressed - they merely surface somewhere else. Politicians must facilitate the discussion of religious issues rather than suppress it, in the spirit of acceptance and tolerance.

8. Cut the emotive content in language issues.

Long ago, Bahasa Malaysia was accepted as the national language. There is no issue there. What we have to do is to think of how we can get our people to equip themselves with everything that they need to thrive in a very competitive world.

One of that is mastery of the English language and we must not let our affection for the Malay, Chinese and Tamil languages stand in the way of that. If we can’t agree, then perhaps the best way is to give people genuine choice in the kind of education they want. As long as language gets politicised, it’s going to be very difficult to move forward.

9. Become more accommodative rather than confrontational.

The old mode of working among the BN coalition was to shout and to draw the lines and this was especially so with Umno. The approach was well, rather confrontational.

And, of course, when the lines are drawn, they are pretty difficult to redraw. It would be far better to seek reconciliation through accommodation and consultation instead. In that mode, chances for solution - rather than stop-gap measures - are infinitely better.

10. Be a true champion of Malaysians.
The time has come for all parties to think of themselves as Malaysians and see how we all as a group can move forward. If we help all the disadvantaged amongst us, automatically the most disadvantaged communities will be helped more.

So.... there it goes.... Pak Lah announced his resignation.............

Is this the END for all this political chaos or just the BEGINNING??? Thats up to his successor and ofcourse BN's reformation.

Many choose to say, 5 years of ineffectual performance.

My stand ...... Abdullah will be fondly remembered for being the first PM to give the country greater democratic space. ( Bapa Demokrasi Malaysia maybe).

I'll be missing your 'coolness" YAB. Your are a nice person. Too nice to be a politician perhaps....

I hope AT LEAST now, we'll put aside our political differences to bid a respectful farewell to YAB Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, The man who Gave us a NEW MALAYSIA with greater democratic space.

I read with interest a malaysiakini news article about ""MB: Kuota baru rumah tidak nafi hak kaum lain"

Its about Kedah Government’s move to increase bumiputra quota in housing schemes from 30% to 50% . Because , they say Malays could not buy houses or shop lots in private housing schemes.

Property developers in Kedah say they may have to close shop if the state government does not revoke its new policy of having a 50% bumiputra quota in housing schemes.

Housing Developers Association of Malaysia (Rehda) Kedah/Perlis chairman Ricque Liew said the state government should stick to the national policy where the bumiputra quota was fixed at 30%.

He said even some Malays did not want to buy bumiputra lots as they could not make much of a profit when they sold them later on.

“The value of bumiputra units do not appreciate much. Buyers often have problems reselling them as they must sell to bumiputra buyers only.

“Such a policy will only restrict the Malays from making a profit at market value,” Liew said in response to the government’s move to increase the bumiputra quota in housing schemes from 30% to 50%,

Well, the explanation of Rehda's chairman sounds more acceptable. Perhaps, The state government should carry out a survey to find out why Malays could not buy houses or shop lots in private housing schemes before jumping into their own conclusion.

You say its for the bumiputeras. BUT IS THIS WHAT THEY (malays) REALLY WANT?

Btw, kuota baru tidak nafi hak kaum orang lain??? I don't understand what are they ( state government) trying to tell here.

I wonder why the "silents" from the chiness and indian reps ( kedah excos). YB. ENCIK ARUMUGAM A/L VENGATARAKOO what you got to say about this?

P/s: Kedah MB said : "Keputusan ini juga adalah demi kepentingan orang ramai tapi kalau cakap pasal keuntungan, memang (pemaju) akan rugi. Tapi tak mungkin mereka akan tutup (gulung tikar).

KEPENTINGAN ORANG RAMAI???
KALAU PEMAJU RUGI, THEN NO MORE NEW HOUSING PROJECTS IN KEDAH. KALAU TAK ADA RUMAH BARU, 'ORANG RAMAI' YANG DIMAKSUDKAN OLEH YAB NAK BELI APA?

TALK WITH SOME SENSE PLEASE.......

PEMUDA MIC (blog) : Kuota rumah bumi daripada 30% kepada 50%

Last week, odd-job worker P. Ragu travelled with his family from Johor to Perak to seek the help of the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah to get him a MyKad, after having to use temporary identification papers since 1998.

Ragu, an abandoned child, had been issued with a green identity card in 2002, indicating that he was a temporary resident of Malaysia. He was abandoned by his parents in Parit Buntar and had been under the Social Welfare Department’s care until he was 16. His card, however, was revoked when the ministry stopped issuing them in 2004, depriving him of the ability to secure proper employment to support his family.

MIC

MIC President Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu said the party had prepared a detailed report on it to be presented to the Cabinet Committee on Indian Community Development, which is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said that the party, through the MIC-owned Social Strategic Foundation, had helped to obtain citizenship for 200 stateless Malaysians between 1999 and 2008.

MIC secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam has estimated that at least 20,000 Malaysian Indians were still without identification papers.
He said that this could just be the tip of the iceberg.“This problem has lingered on for too long and it seems there are no serious efforts being taken to solve it.“If the problem lies with the system or the bureaucracy, then change the system or simplify the procedures. Don’t trouble the people so much,” he said.
He suggested that the NRD hired more officials who could speak the local dialects to help locals get registered.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan had suggested that the NRD set up a special unit to cut red tape to process the applications of stateless people in the country as without the documents they were deprived of proper education and jobs, and subjected to the threat of deportation.

SUHAKAM

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) wants the Government to set up a special task force to look into the growing problem of ‘stateless’ Malaysians.
Commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam said the task force must specifically look into the core problem and others, like documentation, and to solve them.
He said the issue needed to be addressed urgently.

GOVERNMENT

The National Registration Department (NRD) will go on a nationwide search to register “stateless” persons.
“I will follow the order of the minister to go to certain areas in all the states to help the stateless people,” said NRD director-general Datuk Mohd Abdul Halim Muhamad.
On Thursday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar told the department to check the situation of stateless people and give them identity cards.
